Abstract
The historic town Madurai is undergoing a gradual shift from
its historic image to a commercial area. The study attempts at identifying the
historic elements of the core area, analyzing their current situation and
proposing strategies for to maintain their architectural and historic values.
The roads connected with the historic elements are taken.
The fabric of the street and activity of the place is analyzed which affects
the image of the city. The streets are analyzed based on their activity,
parking issues and problems regarding the go-downs.
The elements are listed and their activities are mapped. The
analysis is made based on the type of commercial activity and what commercial
activities can be encouraged and what can be removed to maintain the image of
the city.
The historic core area has many historic elements and the
core area have history dating back to sangam era. The city stands as a
representation of the cultural background of a community. Due to the changing
image of the city, there are chances for the core to lost its image and
transform into a commercial hub. If the transformations are not controlled then
the city may entirely lose its historic value.
